Sublime. Would be part of the Canon if written 2900 years ago."Who sees with equal eye, as God of all,
A hero perish, or a sparrow fall,
Atoms or systems into ruin hurl'd,
And now a bubble burst, and now a world.
Hope humbly then; with trembling pinions soar;
Wait the great teacher Death; and God adore!"

An Essay on Man Books Reviews
Pope has a way with words like no other author I have read. He laces it with many names from history and brings extra meaning to his work. Mike Fisher
A reliable modern version of the classic work. Even the front cover is cool.
It is a timeless piece of writing. Even though some parts of the verse may sound out of date, the message the poems convey is always up-to-date.
Caveat emptor the MP3 CD is a reproduction of the free Librivox recording An Essay on Man.
Alexander Pope's An Essay on Man is without a doubt one of the greatest works of English Literature; the words flow beautifully and the subject is worthwhile.
Nobody does what Pope does better than Pope. And distinguishing poets is important. Dryden might be better but he is a poorer architect in structuring meaning which was so important for the age. They so much wanted to understand, and Pope's explanation of Man and his co-ordinates is high Augustan thought. Pope is exceptional. As is his language.
Another great piece of English literature that I missed reading while a youth. Alexander Pope was both extremely bright and blessed with a graceful writing style;these two assets were combined and put to good use on a topic of keen personal interest to all readers.
I found the footnotes provided by the book's editor, Tom Jones, to be quite helpful. However, his introductory essay, while intelligent, seemed to me to be too long.
Sublime. Would be part of the Canon if written 2900 years ago.
